What a transfer to Ukraine actually costs
The advertised fee is rarely the real price. Most of what a transfer costs is hidden in the exchange rate you are offered, which is why "zero fee" can be the most expensive option on the list.
How to read any transfer quote
- Find the mid-market rate first. That is the real exchange rate, the one you see on a search engine or a rate site, with no margin added.
- Ask what actually lands. Ignore the fee and the rate separately, and look only at how many hryvnia the recipient receives for the amount you send. That single number is the price.
- Compare within the same hour. Rates move. A quote from yesterday tells you nothing about today.
- Discount the welcome offer. A first-transfer promotional rate is not the rate you will pay in month three. Compare standing rates.
- Count the receiving side. Card top-up, bank deposit, and cash pickup are not equally convenient in every town, and the cheapest route is worthless if your relative cannot collect it.
